Last, this, next year
The same grid for years, where two of the three words are irregular.
kyonen
last year
Last year, the usual anchor for recaps. Like kinou, it pairs with past tense.
kyonen kekkon shita n da.
I got married last year.
kyonen kekkon shita n desu.
I got married last year.
It breaks the sen- pattern. Say a short kyo- (kyo-ne-n, three beats), not the long kyou of 'today'. sakunen (昨年, #5231) is the formal version heard in business talk and the news: recognise it, but say kyonen even in desu/masu.
kotoshi
this year
This year, for yearly plans and recaps, and the New Year line kotoshi mo yoroshiku.
kotoshi kekkon suru n da.
I'm getting married this year.
kotoshi kekkon suru n desu.
I'm getting married this year.
It breaks the kon- pattern: kotoshi. The kon- reading turns up in work talk as konnendo (今年度, this fiscal year).
rainen
next year
Next year, for plans and hopes. It is the one year word that fits the rai- pattern of raishuu and raigetsu.
rainen kekkon suru n da.
I'm getting married next year.
rainen kekkon suru n desu.
I'm getting married next year.
