Idioms, Stage 4chunk 15 of 22Feelings & temper

- mune ga itamuit pains me, it breaks my heartliterally “the chest aches”
- gutto kurube moved, it really gets youliterally “comes with a squeeze”
- mune ga ippaioverwhelmed with emotionliterally “the chest is full”
Mix-ups mune ga itamu (it pains me) vs mune ga ippai (overwhelmed): same opening, opposite tone.
mune ga itamu
polite mune ga itamimasu
“the chest aches”
it pains me, it breaks my heart
In English: it breaks my heart
Said about sad news, someone's hardship, or guilt at hurting someone: aa iu nyuusu o miru to mune ga itamu. Kokoro ga itamu means the same and is said about three times as often; mune ga itamu sounds a little more formal. For guilt, English says 'I feel bad' or 'it pains me' rather than 'it breaks my heart'. Mune ga itai can also be literal chest pain.
Same meaning, said more: kokoro ga itamu. Casual: mune ga itai (included in the count; can also be literal chest pain). Written: mune o itameru.
aa iu nyuusu o miru to, mune ga itamu yo ne.
News like that really breaks your heart.

hisaichi no eizou o miru to, mune ga itamimasu.
