hara ga tatsu

polite hara ga tachimasu

Literally

“the belly stands up”

Means

get angry, be annoyed

The anger you feel inside about a person or thing. In casual speech ga drops (maji hara tatsu). Okoru is showing anger or telling someone off, and hara o tateru is the 'get angry over it' form, heard mostly in sonna koto de hara o tateru na (don't get angry over that).

Plain alternatives: mukatsuku, iraira suru.

casual

nanka jibun ni hara tatsu.

I'm kind of mad at myself.

なんか自分に腹立つ。

polite

jibun ni hara ga tachimashita.

I was angry with myself.

atama ni kuru

polite atama ni kimasu

Literally

“it comes to the head”

Means

get mad, be furious

Mostly an outburst about what someone did: atama kita! or honto atama kuru. It's stronger and more sudden than hara ga tatsu. Not 'go to one's head' (getting conceited is choushi ni noru).

Plain one-word alternative: mukatsuku.

casual

ano hito no taido, maji atama kuru.

That person's attitude really pisses me off.

あの人の態度、マジ頭来る。

polite

ano taido ni wa atama ni kimashita.

That attitude made me really angry.

ki ni kuwanai

roughcasual only
Literally

“the mind won't eat it”

Means

don't like, rubs you the wrong way

In English: rub someone the wrong way

Blunt dislike of a person or how they act, often vague with nanka or doumo: aitsu, nanka ki ni kuwanai. You'll also hear nani ga ki ni kuwanai n da? (what's your problem with it?). The softer form is ki ni iranai, and the plain word is kirai.

Softer: ki ni iranai; plain word: kirai.

casual

aitsu, nanka ki ni kuwanai na.

Something about that guy rubs me the wrong way.

あいつ、なんか気に食わないな。

Literally

“go 'flare'”

Means

snap, lose one's temper

In English: fly off the handle

A sudden flash of anger that makes you act without thinking. You'll mostly hear it in the apology tsui katto natte (I just snapped). It's short-lived, unlike the lingering hara ga tatsu.

Plain slang alternative: kireru (snap).

casual

gomen, tsui katto natchatta.

Sorry, I just snapped.

ごめん、ついカッとなっちゃった。

polite

sumimasen, tsui katto natte shimaimashita.

Means

sickening, leaves you disgusted

A rough reaction to a nasty story, an unfair ending or a bully: munakuso warui hanashi da na. Kimochi warui is gut-level 'gross, creepy'; munakuso warui is moral disgust at something unfair or cruel.

Slang short form: munakuso.

be irritated (by a remark)

The sharp flash of irritation at a remark or tone, mostly in the past: ima no, chotto kachin to kita. It's milder than atama ni kuru, and it's set off by words rather than events.

casual
