How many times
Word sets, Stage 2chunk 2 of 21Counters
Lets you say how often something happened and ask how many times.
- -kaitimes (how often)
- nankaihow many times
- -dotimes (occurrences); degrees
- nandohow many times; what temperature
Mix-ups -kai and -do mean the same here; ikkai is also 'ground floor'.
-kai
times (how often)
ikkai, nikai, sankai, yonkai, gokai, rokkai, nanakai, hakkai, kyuukai, jukkai; mou ikkai = one more time.
Sounds the same as -kai for floors, so ikkai is also 'ground floor'. -do means the same and is a bit more formal.
gomen, mou ikkai itte.
Sorry, say that again.
ごめん、もう一回言って。
sumimasen, mou ikkai itte kudasai.
Sorry, could you say that again?
すみません、もう一回言ってください。

In a building, nankai (or nangai) also asks 'which floor'.

-do
times (occurrences); degrees
Like -kai but a bit more formal, with no sound changes: ichido, nido, sando ... juudo; mou ichido = once more.
Ichido alone often means 'sometime, at least once'. Also degrees: sanjuu-do = 30 degrees.
ichido ano mise ni itte mitai na.
I'd like to try that place sometime.
一度あの店に行ってみたいな。
ichido ano mise ni itte mitai desu.
