Lets you say prices and buy or order things by the piece, bottle, sheet or cup.
- -enyen
- -kosmall things (counter); pieces
- -honlong thin things (counter): bottles, pens, umbrellas
- -maiflat things (counter): sheets, tickets, plates, shirts
- -haicups, glasses, bowls (counter)
Mix-ups -hon and -hai share the same changes (ippon/ippai, sanbon/sanbai); 4 yen is yoen.
-en
yen
After the number: ichien, nien, san'en, yoen, goen, rokuen, nanaen, hachien, kyuuen, juuen; to ask a price, say ikura (or nan'en).
Watch 4 yen (yoen) and 9 yen (kyuuen). 10,000 yen is ichiman'en, not juusen'en.

For small or chunky things like eggs, apples and sweets: ikko, niko, sanko, yonko, goko, rokko, nanako, hakko, kyuuko, jukko; how many is nanko.
Hitotsu, futatsu ... works for the same things and is the safe default.

No sound changes: ichimai, nimai, sanmai, yonmai ... juumai; how many is nanmai.
Also counts photos and slices of bread or pizza.
