Bad blood
Idioms, Stage 3chunk 10 of 22Getting on with people
Rubbing people the wrong way, from offence to a new enemy or a lasting grudge.
- ki o waruku surutake offense, feel hurtliterally “make one's mood bad”
- ki ni sawaruoffend, get on someone's nervesliterally “hurt one's spirits”
- teki ni mawasumake an enemy of, turn (someone) against youliterally “turn (someone) into an enemy”
- ne ni motsuhold a grudgeliterally “keep it at the root”
Mix-ups ki o waruku suru (they take offence) vs ki ni sawaru (it grates on them) differ in who is hurt; don't merge ki ni sawaru with ki ni suru / ki ni naru; ne ni motsu (hold a grudge) is the opposite of mizu ni nagasu in Letting things go.
ki o waruku suru
polite ki o waruku shimasu
“make one's mood bad”
take offense, feel hurt
In English: take it the wrong way
Almost always a softener before blunt words: ki o waruku shinaide (no offense, but...). The subject is the person who might feel hurt; ki ni sawaru is the remark that does the hurting.
ki o waruku shinaide kiite ne.
Don't take this the wrong way, but hear me out.
気を悪くしないで聞いてね。
ki o waruku shinaide kiite kudasai ne.
Please don't take this the wrong way.

あの人を敵に回すと怖いよ。
