Bye for now

Conversation phrases, Stage 1chunk 62 of 68Greetings, thanks and sorry

Lets you say goodbye to a friend you will see again soon.

Mix-ups sayounara sounds final; mata ne is the friendly default.

mata ne

casual only

see you; bye

The everyday goodbye between friends and family; answer with mata ne or jaa ne.

Jaa ne is just as common. With people you speak desu/masu to, say shitsurei shimasu instead.

casual

jaa, mata ne. kaettara renraku suru.

Okay, see you. I'll message you when I get home.

jaa mata

polite dewa mata

see you then; bye for now

Said as you split up, often right after making plans, to someone you'll see again.

With a boss or client, shitsurei shimasu is safer than dewa mata.

casual

jaa mata, raishuu no kin'youbi ni ne.

See you then, next Friday.

polite

dewa mata, kin'youbi ni oai shimashou.

Until Friday, then.

mata ato de

polite mata nochihodo

see you later (today); talk later

When you'll meet or talk again the same day.

I'm busy right now, so later, okay?

polite

mata nochihodo renraku shimasu.

I'll get back to you later.

baibai

casual only

bye-bye

Light, cute goodbye among friends and to kids, usually with a wave.

Adults say it too, women more than men; never to a boss or customer.

casual

baibai! mata asobou ne.

Bye! Let's hang out again.
