Maybe next time

Conversation phrases, Stage 3chunk 10 of 21Plans and invitations

Lets you leave the door open when you can't or won't commit.

Mix-ups mata kondo can be a polite no rather than a real promise.

mata kondo

next time; another time

Puts a plan off to some later time; also the soft way to turn down an invitation.

Often a polite no: don't expect a date to follow.

casual

I can't today, but next time.

polite

kyou wa chotto... mata kondo onegai shimasu.

Today's a bit... maybe another time.

kondo sasotte

polite kondo sasotte kudasai

invite me next time

Softens a no: you can't make it this time but want to be asked again. Also said when you hear about a fun outing you missed.

Sasou is 'to invite'; 'sasotte kurete arigatou' is 'thanks for inviting me'.

casual

kyou wa muri da kedo, mata kondo sasotte.

I can't today, but invite me next time.

polite

zannen desu. mata kondo sasotte kudasai.

That's a shame. Please invite me next time.

ki ga muitara

if I feel like it

A non-committal maybe about going or doing something; it can work as a polite no.

Ki ga muku = to feel inclined. Also an easygoing invite: 'ki ga muitara kite ne' (come if you feel like it).

casual

ki ga muitara iku kamo.

I might go if I feel like it.

polite

ki ga muitara, itsu demo asobi ni kite kudasai.

Drop by any time you feel like it.
